# Editorial Minimalism

A reusable visual taste derived from observing https://america.gov/ on 2026-10-02. This is an interpretation, not an official design system. The reference may change; these principles stand independently. Apply to brand stories, about pages and focused landing pages. For dense directories or account screens, borrow the typography and spacing without forcing a marketing layout.

## Design intent

Create calm confidence and human warmth through editorial typography, generous space and a clear primary action. Make the content feel thoughtfully composed rather than decorated. Preserve the user's brand, audience, language and functional requirements.

## Visual grammar

- **Typography:** Use a distinctive, readable serif for short display headlines, paired with a restrained sans serif for body copy and controls. A Chinese edition may use an appropriate Songti family; do not assume Latin font metrics translate directly. Keep actual copy readable at mobile widths. Start around 64–112px for desktop display headlines, 40–56px on mobile, and 16–18px for body text; tune to content rather than treating these as rules. Use regular or medium display weight, careful line breaks and modest tracking.
- **Color:** A white or slightly cool canvas, pale blue-gray surfaces, dark ink or navy text, and one purposeful brand accent. Reserve strong color for the primary action, emphasis and selected state. Keep secondary copy visibly readable; quiet should not mean low contrast.
- **Space:** Give each section breathing room. Prefer a constrained content width around 1040–1200px, 80–120px desktop section spacing and 48–72px mobile spacing as starting points. Leave a meaningful visual pause around the primary headline. Preserve comfortable mobile gutters.
- **Shape:** Large, softly rounded major surfaces and pill-shaped primary controls. Avoid putting every sentence in a card. Use plain editorial text sections, separators and a small number of purposeful surfaces.
- **Composition:** A simple masthead, strong headline, concise supporting paragraph and unmistakable primary action. Center the hero when it strengthens focus; asymmetric editorial sections below can give the page rhythm. Choose section order from the narrative, not a compulsory template.
- **Imagery:** Prefer authentic human or contextual photography when relevant. For a software brand, an original brand illustration or product demonstration can be better. Make one visual focal point rather than many floating decorative icons. Do not reproduce government seals, national flags or the reference's identity to imply affiliation.
- **Motion:** Slow, subtle movement with a purpose: a gentle hero transition, contextual carousel or restrained illustration. Keep text and controls stable. Provide reduced-motion behavior; avoid scroll hijacking and distracting perpetual motion.
- **Navigation:** Keep the masthead sparse and preserve a clear route home. Search-led products can put one search entry at the center; an about page can instead focus on its story. A collapsed menu is a contextual option, not a required motif.

## Apply it

Read the page's current content, branding and interactions first. State a concise design direction, then choose typography, hierarchy and the visual focal point. Borrow the reference's relationships—scale, space, restraint—not its exact copy, image assets or composition. Reuse existing application components and locale handling where suitable.

For an AI directory about page, explain why the directory exists, distinguish tools from agent skills, and describe actual curation and collection behavior. Do not invent usage counts, partnerships, testimonials, privacy guarantees or capabilities merely to fill the layout.

## Review the result

Inspect real rendered desktop and mobile layouts. Check headline wrapping, navigation fit, content width, long names or commands, and primary-action visibility. Confirm keyboard focus, reduced motion and locale switching when present. A successful result reads as calm, spacious and credible while remaining recognizably the user's product. If the page becomes a wall of oversized type, a grid of identical cards, or a decorative animation showcase, reduce those elements and restore hierarchy.
