For a published GitHub skill, use the skills CLI and choose Claude Code in its prompts. For a manual installation, keep SKILL.md and supporting files together in .claude/skills/<name>/ for a project or ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ for personal use. Verify the installation with a small task.
1. Check the source and requirements
Open the author's repository before running an install command. Read the instructions, license, supporting scripts and runtime requirements. A skill provides instructions to an agent; it does not grant a subscription or remove the need for installed tools.
2. Install one published skill
This example selects Anthropic's frontend-design skill instead of the whole repository. Run it in a terminal with Node.js and npx available. Follow the CLI prompts to choose the agent and installation scope; review the destination before confirming.
npx skills add https://github.com/anthropics/skills --skill frontend-designExample command or prompt; not a recorded execution.
3. Keep manual installations complete
Use the author's complete skill folder. Copying only SKILL.md can break relative references to scripts, assets or reference files. Project scope keeps a workflow with one repository; personal scope makes it available across your projects. These paths are for Claude Code, not universal client settings.

4. Verify before doing important work
In Claude Code, check whether the skill appears in the slash-command menu, then invoke /frontend-design with a small brief. Ask which skill was loaded and inspect the output. If it is missing or inactive, use the troubleshooting guide rather than repeatedly reinstalling everything.
/frontend-design Propose a visual direction for a small developer-tool landing page. Do not change files yet.Example command or prompt; not a recorded execution.
What about Codex and other agents?
Select the intended client in the skills CLI rather than reusing a Claude Code directory. Read that client's own installation documentation. Supporting scripts and client-specific frontmatter may require adaptation; success in one client is not proof of support in another.
